Who owns my domain name?

Domain names are as a licence. As you hold the domain name licence you can do what you want with it.
All domain names we register are registered in the customer's name. This means that for the duration of the registration period YOU are the licence holder of the domain name. When the licence is due for renewal, you will have to pay a renewal fee. If you do not renew the licence, then it will become available for any eligible applicant to register on a first come first served basis on the Domain Open Market. This is why it is very important to pay a renewal fee for your domain name every year before the due date...don't get caught out loosing the rights over your Domain Name...you will loose the use of you whole website too...if this happens!

What happend if I do not renew my Domain Name on time?

If you have forgotten to renew your domain name and it expires - don't panic, you will still be able to renew it as long as you act quickly.

After the registration of a .com.au, .net.au, .org.au or any other .au extension lapses, theĀ  domain name becomes inactive for 1 month and then after this it enters into what is known as a 'redemption period' status for 35 days, during which it can still be renewed but there will be an additional fee to get it out of redemption $140.00. However, after this period, the domain name is deleted from the .au registrar on the next business day and can then be registered by any eligible party.

When a domain name ending in .com, .net, .org, .info, .biz expires, it first goes into the Domain Name Grace Period (DNGP), which lasts for approximately 40 days, during which time you are able to renew the domain by simply paying the renewal fees.

After this period, the name then enters a further 30 day Domain Name Redemption Period (DNRP). The domain can still be retrieved by the original registrant, but it is a costly and complex process taking a few day - Costs TBA

. If the domain is still not renewed after the DNRP, there is then a 5-day Pending Delete Phase after which time, the domain name will be available for registration by any other eligible party.

The best way to ensure you don't find yourself in this position is to renew your domain registration as soon as you receive a renewal reminder email from us.

One of the most common reasons for registrants not renewing their domain name aside from forgetting is having outdated email contact details on their domain name record. The admin contact email address on the domain record is the address that renewal reminders go to.

Please make sure that the email address you used to regsiter the domain name is kept active or let us know if you ahve a new email address.
